Book a Cruise Online Without the Guesswork

To book a cruise online you need about a dozen clicks: pick a sailing, a cabin category, a fare, the guests, the add-ons and a payment. Each click carries a decision that is easy to get wrong when you are moving fast — and a cruise is a big purchase to get wrong.

Cruise Clicks explains what is behind each of those clicks. We look at the different kinds of cruise booking sites, walk through the booking screens step by step, show how to book safely, and explain the cruise apps you will use before and during your trip. We do not post fares here — prices change daily — but our sister sites Wave Season and Cruising for Less track current promotions, and our cruise advisors at Mister Cruise can check any sailing for you.

Where You Can Book a Cruise Online

Cruise line websites

Each line sells its own ships directly. You see its full inventory and promotions, but only for that one line.

Online travel agencies

Large travel sites sell cruises alongside flights and hotels. They are useful for browsing; cruise know-how varies.

Cruise-specialist agencies

Agencies that focus on cruising, often with a search engine and human advisors behind it. Our own Cruise Genie lets you search and book every major line.

Advisor sites with quote forms

Instead of a booking engine, you send your wish list and a person comes back with options and prices.

Each type has a place. The comparison is on our cruise booking sites page.

Deposits, payment dates and re-pricing are covered in detail on Web Cruise Reservations; cabin location on Cruise Ship Deck Plans.

Apps Are Now Part of the Booking

Booking online no longer ends with a confirmation email. Most cruise lines now expect you to use their cruise line app for online check-in, boarding documents, onboard schedules and reservations, and many sell drinks packages, Wi-Fi and excursions through a pre-cruise cruise planner app or website.

Independent cruise apps add more: ship trackers, roll calls with fellow passengers, and deck plans. Our cruise line app guide lists what each major line’s official app says it does, and our Cruise Planner page explains how pre-cruise shopping works. Check-in day itself is covered by Cruise Check.

Booking a Cruise Online: Quick Answers

Can I book a cruise online by myself?

Yes. Every major cruise line takes reservations on its own website and app, and many travel agencies also let you book online. You choose the sailing, the cabin and the fare, enter the details of everyone travelling and pay a deposit.

Do you pay less if you book a cruise online?

Not as a rule. Cruise lines set their own fares, so the same cabin usually costs about the same wherever you book it. Differences come from promotions, amenities and timing. Web Cruise Reservations compares booking yourself with booking through an advisor.

Which cruise booking site is best?

The best site is the one that shows the full price clearly, explains the fare rules before you pay, and gives you a real person to contact if something goes wrong. See our guide to cruise booking sites.

Do I need the cruise line app?

You do not need it to book, but most lines now use their app for check-in, onboard schedules and reservations, so it is worth downloading before you sail. See cruise line apps.

Want Someone to Do the Clicking?

Tell us your dates, budget and who is sailing. Our cruise advisors at Mister Cruise will compare the lines and come back with real options. Free, no obligation.
